Gazit: First Beit Din for Monetary Laws Will Be Set Up in Beit Shemesh
Tmura

Community rabbis devoted their Shabbat drasha to the importance of turning to Rabbinic Batei Din.
A first Rabbinic court (Beit Din) for monetary laws (dinei mamonot), under the auspices of the Gazit Association will be established in the next few weeks in Beit Shemesh. The Gazit Beit Din will deal with economic claims and disputes according to halacha. The Beit Din in BS is the first of eleven batei din which are expected to be built in Israel. Rav Moshe Be’eri, the person behind the idea to establish these batei din, describes the uniqueness of the Gazit batei din: “Many people shy away from turning to the Rabbinical batei din, either because they have had a bad experience in the past or based on prejudice regarding how well dayanim understand modern reality. We try to create a different kind of Beit Din. Besides getting a smicha from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, every Gazit dayan has broad, general knowledge, which ensures a psak din based on halacha, plus a full understanding of the situation and its complexity. Beside the dayanim, there is a large staff of consultants at their disposal, who will advise them in various areas, such as: economics, medicine, law, computers and more. In the course of their training for dayanut, they undergo apprenticeships and hishtalmuyot in preparation for the position, which include learning the relevant laws in the Israeli legal system, mediation principles and more.”
The idea of establishing the Gazit batei din is supported and encouraged by rabbis from different circles, rashei yeshivot gvohot and hesder yeshivas, academicians and public figures. Beit Shemesh Chief Rabbi, Rav Shimon Biton, shlit”a, also gave his blessing to the initiative.
Towards the opening of the beit din, the many community rabbis devoted their drasha on Parashat Noach to the issue of Jewish law. The rabbis emphasized the great importance of turning to Rabbinic Courts, which rule according to halacha. Also in anticipation of the opening of the beit din, activities will be held in the coming month in the city neighborhoods. The central activity will be an inauguration ceremony attended by the city’s rabbis, councilmen and public figures, to be held on December 12th. A mock trial will be held during the conference dealing with the question of placing cellular antennas on residential buildings.
