Los Angeles Jewish Federation Pledges $400,000 for Education
Keren Or, 12 January 2007

Beit Shemesh received an important guest this week, John Fishel, President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Fishel and Mayor Vaknin discussed the status of the Ethiopian population in Beit Shemesh. Fishel was impressed by the facts and statistics Vaknin presented him with and pledged support in the amount of $400,000 per year for the next three years to run the "Parents and Children Together” (PACT) program here. PACT will provide educational and social services to pre-school children of Ethiopian families, in an effort to help the youngsters gain academic parity with their Israeli peers by the first grade. Vaknin stressed how vital this assistance is and how much he values the contribution of our partners in Los Angeles. Fishel expressed the strong responsibility that the Los Angeles Jewish Federation feels towards the Ethiopian community. "The Los Angeles community wants to be involved not just monetarily but also by sending emissaries back and forth between Los Angeles and Beit Shemesh." This project is slated to carry on through 2009 with the hope that it will lead to further projects and deeper involvement between the Beit Shemesh and Los Angeles communities.
